Leesburg, Va. — I was raking the first base area after a playoff game against our crosstown rival during my senior year at Heritage. We had just beaten Loudoun County, ending the season and careers for a really strong group of seniors and some of my best friends. As I was raking, one of those friends approached—his shirt disheveled, his emotions on his sleeve. As a senior, it was the last time he’d play baseball competitively in our community. I dropped the rake, we talked, and then we embraced. As this happened, two more of my longtime friends and travel…

Leesburg, Va. — Well, for those who somehow don’t know, there aren’t any sports to cover in Loudoun County right now. Everything, save for marble racing, has been shut down due to the pandemic and need for social distancing. We at LoCoSports obviously can’t go out and cover games, so we decided to make sure our faithful readers still had something to pass the time. We decided to put together a list of the best games we covered over the last year. Here’s what we believe makes up a great game: Was it a fun game to watch? What was…
Loudoun County, Va. — After winter sports were cut short and as spring sports await their ultimate fate, we wanted a way for people to forget about March Sadness, so we decided to create our own March Madness, LoCoSports style! Here’s how it works. We’ve randomly matched up each of the 16 public high schools in Loudoun County. Over the next 10 days, we’re going to create polls (below and on Twitter) where students and fans from the competing schools can vote to move their school into the next round. Tip-offs will start at 7:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. and…
Loudoun County, Va. — As sports come to a grinding halt across the country, we wanted to reflect on the efforts of the girls basketball teams in Loudoun County this winter. Only five teams entered the LoCo Top 5 in 2019-2020 and nothing changed here in this season’s final edition. However, we wanted to take the time to applaud the success of the teams and their graduating seniors and look forward to what’s to come next winter. Of course, if you’re into hard numbers, check out the full Cedar Run District, Potomac District, and Dulles District standings. [adrotate banner=”39″] [adrotate banner=”40″] 1.…
Leesburg, Va. — In the program’s 66-year history, the Loudoun County High School boys basketball team had never experienced as much success as they did in the 2019-2020 season. Led by a strong senior class, the Raiders won the Dulles District regular season and tournament titles and, for the first time since the school opened in 1954, a region championship. The VHSL Region 4C crown earned the Raiders the opportunity to “host” George Washington High School in a VHSL 4A State quarterfinal matchup at Riverside High School in Leesburg on March 6. With the full support of the community, Loudoun…
Leesburg, Va. — Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. It’s a familiar sound for the Potomac Falls High School boys basketball team. The sound of head coach Jeff Hawes’ shoe hitting the hardwood. It was 4-0 less than 90 seconds in, but Hawes wasn’t going to let the region championship game get anymore out of hand. Time out, Panthers. Hawes rallied his troops and – despite earning a state playoff berth the night before – encouraged them not to get complacent. The Panthers responded. After another Riverside basket, Potomac Falls went on a 16-3 run to close the first quarter, and the Panthers…
