Clifton (September 23, 2015) — The Broad Run High School (4-0) and Centreville High School (2-1) football teams were both unbeaten and viewed as two of the top teams in the area, but on September 18, it was Broad Run junior Meech Hembry and the Spartans who throttled the Wildcats and emerged victorious, 56-21, after amassing an astounding 482 rushing yards.
Broad Run senior Chris Moore‘s strip during the game’s opening kickoff gave the Spartans the ball on the Centreville 26 from where quarterback Kyle Brickerd found the opportunity to run in the game’s first touchdown — largely untouched — from 17 yards out just 54 seconds into the contest.
For the first time this season, it was the Spartan defense that started slowly, as they were caught off guard by a double reverse pass on first down. Centreville’s Kyle Richbourg hauled in the pass from junior quarterback Jameel Siler and the game was tied 7-7 with only 69 seconds elapsed.
An alert play on the ensuing kickoff by Broad Run senior Nick Lindenfeldar put the Spartans back in business as he recovered an onside kick attempt.
On 3rd and 20 from midfield, Hembry scored the first of his five(!!!!!) rushing touchdowns on a beautifully executed draw right up the middle as the game’s first three scores came in the game’s first three minutes.
Tied at 14-14, Brickerd wasted no time leading his team down the field to begin the second quarter and after a 57-yard keeper, he handed it off to Hembry who carried it in from eight yards out.
After a 1-yard keeper by Siler once again brought the teams to a stalemate, Hembry got loose up the middle for his third touchdown, this time from 68 yards out.
So much for halftime adjustments, as Hembry took the ball right up the gut on the first play from scrimmage to start the third quarter and scored from 66 yards out.
With Hembry nearly exhausted from his big running first half, Broad Run handed the ball off to senior Clinton Kumi who scored his first and second touchdowns of the season on consecutive Spartan drives.
Following a fumble recovery by Broad Run sophomore Carlos Hatcher, Hembry added the cherry on top and found the end zone one last time to seal the deal for the Spartans.
On September 25, Broad Run will take the short bus ride to downtown Brambleton for another edition of the Battle for a Better Cause against the Briar Woods Falcons in a game dedicated to the memory of Spartan Madison Small — which also happens to be the LoCoSports’ Game of the Week!
