Leesburg (September 4, 2015) — Loudoun County High School senior Malorie Joseph has decided to continue her soccer career at the University of Mary Washington starting in the 2016-2017 academic year.
“I chose UMW for many reasons,” the 5-foot-3 midfielder said. “The first being that it offers a nursing program, which is what I intend to pursue. Secondly, I have been given the opportunity to continue playing soccer for a great program.”
The University of Mary Washington – located in historic Fredericksburg – has been led by head coach Corey Hewson for the past eight years.
“I’ve had the opportunity to meet some of the players and get to know the coaches better,” Joseph said. “I’m really looking forward to being a part of the team.”
The Division III Eagles had a solid season in 2014 finishing 12-7-2. Mary Washington finished second in the Capital Athletic Conference losing in the conference finals.
“I plan to have a positive impact on the Eagles’ midfield by using my strengths as a distributor and getting the ball to where it needs to be,” Joseph added.
Joseph has been playing nine years of travel soccer for VSA ‘97 elite. Junior year she was selected to be a part of the VHSL 4A all-state girls soccer team.
“I’ve been playing soccer since I was three and have loved it ever since,” Joseph said. “My former teammate, Cameron Carter, died when I was in eighth grade. My dad always used to tell me to ‘do it for Cam,’ and now with the recent passing of my dad, I am even more motivated.”
Joseph is a four year starter at Loudoun County High School. She represented her school at the 2015 VHSL 4A state championship for girls soccer in Charlottesville and came out with the Raiders first ever state title. Joseph has very high expectations for the upcoming year and is looking forward to her last year as a Raider.
“I’m expecting nothing less than a second state title,” Joseph said. “We graduated some key players last year, but if we stay focused and play our fast-paced, possession game we should be able to remain on top.”
