Loudoun County, Va. — With the transition to working from home and with the start of distance learning, neck pain is a common problem we are seeing in our clinic. The change in desk set up, chairs or extended time sitting and working at a desk can be a major contributor to neck pain. Neck problems can vary in severity and can also lead to feeling pain in other parts of your body. One of several neck problems we see is called cervical radiculopathy. Cervical radiculopathy is a fancy way of saying your neck pain is caused by a nerve problem. In many cases, people with this condition will feel the effects of the damaged or pinches nerve in other parts of their body instead of their neck.
How Does Cervical Radiculopathy Happen?
- Joint and/or bone degeneration
- Bulging or herniated discs
- Poor posture
- Injuries
What Are The Symptoms?
- Numbness/tingling/pain that radiates down the neck into the shoulder/arm/hand/fingers
- Loss of range of motion in the neck/shoulder/elbow/hand/fingers
- Loss of strength in the neck and arm/hand/fingers
Depending on what nerve is being pinched or damaged, you may feel these symptoms in different parts of your neck, shoulder, arm, hand and/or fingers.
Note from our sponsor: Yes, physical therapy can help! A PT can help identify which nerve is being impacted so we can focus on where the damage is occurring. We use hands on techniques to create space in the joints to take the pressure off of the nerves as well as create a stretching and strengthening routine to maintain the joint space so that you no longer feel radiating pain or numbness and tingling so you can return to your daily activities without pain or problems!
